Taco Seasoning |
Taco Seasoning
1 C. minced dried onions
1/2 C. chili powder
1/4 C. garlic powder
1/4 C. cumin
2 Tbsp. oregano
2 Tbsp. salt
2-3 Tbsp. red pepper flakes (optional, add if you like spicy!)
Mix together all ingredients in a bowl. Store in airtight container.
Use 2-3 Tbsp. of mix to 1 pound of meat. My family likes more seasoning on their meat--just use what tastes good to you. You can add a little water if your meat is really lean to help it coat all the meat evenly.
This recipe is great because you can control how spicy (add red pepper flakes) or smokey (add more or less cumin) you like it, plus, you can leave the salt out all together if you need a lower sodium version (this version already has less sodium than most store brands out there).
I just love your blog, and especially this little series you are doing on mixes. I have one for Onion Soup mix (which I sprinkle into everything now that I have it). Anyway, I love learning about ways to save my family's money and be more industrious with what we have. Thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteJust now getting to this! THAT'S what the others I've tried were missing... dehydrated onion! I'll make this up tomorow, for sure!
ReplyDeleteJust found your blog and I'm pinning a bunch of these mixes on Pinterest. I am trying to go more natural than store bought. Thanks so much!! : )
ReplyDeleteMe too Diane. Cant wait to try it.

If you can find it, use Mexican oregano. It makes a big difference.

ReplyDeleteHello, I almost NEVER comment on posts. However, I had to comment. This seasoning is the most delicious taco seasoning me or my hubby has EVER tasted!!!! I love your site. I just discovered it and already made both oatmeal mixes and this taco seasoning. Next week I will make the tortilla mix and the pancake mix. PLEASE POST MORE!!! I am ADDICTED to your mixes. :) not just the taste, convenience and enjoyment, but the amount I will save on our grocery bill over time is ridiculously awesome. Thanks so much, and again please post more!!!!!
ReplyDeleteDo you have a chili seasoning mix?

ReplyDeleteIt would be super helpful if you listed the size/type of containers you use for each mix....just a thought! :)
ReplyDeleteGreat recipe! You can get Mexican oregano from Penzeys, and Tim is right -- it DOES make a big difference. I like to double-season hamburger with this recipe and freeze it in 8-oz bags. Reheat it with a can of fat-free refried beans and you have dinner: low-fat, high-fiber, and all delicious!!
ReplyDeleteWe actually make our own chili powder at our cafe, since the main ingredients are cumin powder, paprika, garlic powder, and cayenne. (Well, many companies also add MSG, but who needs that?!)
ReplyDeleteBut when I experimented with "Taco Seasoning", it did seem like, to be "authentic" (as in "more like store bought"...), it also needed a hearty dash of sugar. Really made that taco meat deluxe, haha!
Thanks for posting. I LOVE making lots of mixes ahead of time!
