Maple Brown Sugar Oatmeal Mix

Here is another mix recipe for your collection:


Maple Brown Sugar Oatmeal Mix

1 C. quick oats (grind in blender or food processor till finely ground)
1 C. quick oats (leave whole)
3/4-1C. brown sugar
1 Tbsp. maple flavoring
2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2  tsp. nutmeg

Combine brown sugar, maple flavoring, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg in a medium bowl.  Stir to thoroughly combine the sugar and extract (a mixer is really helpful for this).  Add in oats and ground oats.  Stir to combine.  Store in airtight container.

To Serve:

Place 2/3 C. oatmeal mix in a bowl and add hot water to desired consistency.

For Apple-cinnamon oatmeal-substitute vanilla extract for the maple and add 1/2 C. dried apple pieces.

*Just like the packets you buy in the store, only you can control the ingredients.
*Package in individual baggies for quick, single serving sizes.
*Add more oats and ground oats to make a less sweet mix.
*Double, triple or quadruple the recipe and store in a large jar, scoop out how much you need.

Where can I find maple flavoring? I assume it's a dry ingredient but couldn't find it at publix today.

Maple flavoring can usually be found with the vanilla extract. It is a liquid flavoring.

Wow, this is great! Do you happen to know what the nutitional information is for it?

I put it into my recipe software and it is about 160 calories for 1/3 C.  You could definitely make the mix with less sugar or even use a brown sugar substitute, if you wanted.

I love using your mixes, but can't help wondering if the measurements are correct?? I'm thinking maybe the quick oats (leave whole) is maybe 10 cups??  thanks again for all the wonderful mixes :)

The recipe is correct, but you can adjust for taste (more or less brown sugar, maple flavoring).  The amount pictured in the jar is multiple batches--my blender will grind about 3 cups of oats at a time.

LOVE THIS!  I love giving my kids oatmeal in the morning but hate buying the packets because they never eat it all and wish I could make smaller portions.  I've been using just plain old oatmeal and they normally don't eat that very well and wanted ways to make it taste better but never knew how!  Thank you so much for sharing!  I can't wait to try this :)

Is that 2 cups of oats to nearly 1 cup of sugar ?? Oasts to sugar ratio sounds sooo high?

I made this for my husband to take to work for an easy breakfast and he said it just taste like salt ( which he loves salt, so it must be pretty strong for him to say that) is anybody else having this issue? Is it maybe a typo at 2 teaspoons?

I'm confused about the oats you used. The picture looks like rolled oats but the recipe calls for quick? My quick oats look much smaller than the ones pictured! Just want to make sure!

I like the idea of this recipe but if I use it again, I will leave out the nutmeg. My kids won't eat it. I thought it sounded odd but made the recipe as listed anyway. The nutmeg really overpowers the other flavors. I've added more of the other ingredient several times so my large batch won't go to waste. Unless your family really love nutmeg, leave it out.

I tripled the recipe and it was WAY TOO SALTY! I should have known since 6 tsp is a ton of salt. I like the concept, so I'm going to buy another bag of quick oats and try to dilute it out. Just as a warning to other people who want to try this... Start with very little salt - you can always add more. Despite my mistake, I'm still very thankful for this website and recipe, as I never would have even known it was possible to make your own instant oatmeal. Genius!

I just tried this! We doubled it. My family loves oatmeal (Porridge as my youngest calls it) but the store bought packs cost so much and my husband has a portion control problem. One pack can be gone in a matter of days and seems like such a waste. (Because, I mostly never get any before it's gone) BUT they loved this and it makes so much and no way my husband can eat through it all before I get some. My daughter...actually just stole my bowl. We added in dried fruit to one mixture w/ the vanilla extract and it offers a different taste through the week. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!

I always grind my own fresh nutmeg... If you do you can cut back on the nutmeg. It is overpowering. I would also cut the salt back to 1-1.5 tsp.
